The last round of matches in the World Cup qualifiers will see the implementations of VAR

There will be the installation of Video Assistant Referee (VAR) at the Cape Coast Sports Stadium for the first time when Ghana host Nigeria in the first leg of the 2022 Fifa World Cup playoffs.

In a letter sent to the Ghana Football Association(GFA) on the need to use VAR for it’s game against Nigeria, the confederation cited the “successful implementation of VAR in the 2022 AFCON, CAF Champions league, CAF Confederation Cup and the CAF Women’s Champions League”.

Meanwhile, Fifa president Gianni Infantino announced during the 13th Extraordinary General Assembly meeting in Cairo last year that: “The final stage of the African World Cup qualifiers will see an improvement in refereeing performance due to the use of VAR.”

We have implemented VAR to help the referees because it is so difficult to be a referee. And it’s our responsibility to put the refs in the right conditions to perform at their best”

Refereeing on the continent has come under the spotlight after a controversial penalty was awarded to Ghana against South Africa by Senegalese referee Ndiaye Maguitta.

The Black Stars booked their place in the play-off round following a 1-0 victory over Bafana Bafana as a result at the Cape Coast Stadium.

The qualified teams are Algeria, Tunisia, Nigeria, Cameroon, DR Congo, Mali, Egypt, Ghana, Senegal and Morocco and five of them after the playoffs will represent Africa at the mundial later this year in Qatar.
