The youngster has technically won Ghana its first medal at the Olympics in almost three decades
Ghanaian young boxer Samuel Takyi has technically won a medal at the 2020 Olympic Games ongoing in Japan after reaching the semifinals of Featherweight Division on Sunday morning.
Takyi, 20, reached the semi finals of Featherweight by defeating 32-year-old Columbian Avila Ceibar. Despite losing the first round of three, Takyi returned to the second round with a renewed energy and won it before stepping up to wrap it in the last round with a sterling performance to the surprise of many.
Takyi will now come up against United States of America boxer Duke Regan on Tuesday for a place in the final as he eyes the gold medal which Ghana is yet to win ever since Olympic Games started.
Even if Takyi loses the semifinals, he will win a bronze medal since there is no third place fight for boxers who lose their semifinals games.
Ghana’s first ever medal at the Olympics came in 1960 when Clement Quartey clinched silver before Eddie Blay got a bronze four years later in Tokyo, Japan.
Prince Amartey came up with the third medal in 1972 when he also won bronze in the boxing division before the Black Meteors won bronze in the football division in 1992 at the Barcelona Olympic Games.
