Boakye Yiadom came close to opening the scoring by the 13th minute but his effort was saved. Seven minutes later, he was brought down on the edge of the box and Andre Ayew curled his resulting free-kick into the net.
The opening goal gave Ghana some breathing space but Ethiopia soon doubled their efforts in search of the equaliser.
