The Magpies midfielder woes this season has been compounded following the untimely demise of his biological mother

Ghana and Newcastle United midfielder Christian Atsu has confirmed the sad passing of his mother on Saturday.

The 28-year-old has been struggling for match fitness recently leading to Newcastle boss Steve Bruce’s decision to offload him. He was not registered for the Premier League and has been on the lookout for a new club.

And with reports linking him to Scottish giants Celtic, his mother Madam Afiko, has unfortunately passed on in Ghana after battling with a short illness.

Although it was initially considered a  rumour, Atsu confirmed the news on his official Twitter account and heaped praise on her in the process.

He wrote: ” Your life was a blessing and your memory a treasure. You are loved beyond measure as you’ve left us today.”
